 Introduction:

Diabetes is a chronic health condition that affects how the body turns food into energy. Normally, when you eat, your body breaks down carbohydrates into glucose ( a type of sugar), which enters the bloodstream. In response, the pancreas releases insulin, a hormones that helps glucose .enter the cells to be used for energy

There are three main types of Diabetes

Type 1 Diabetes:

This type is less common, affecting only about 5% to 10% of all people with diabetes. This happens when the body’s immune system attacks the cells in the pancreas that make insulin. Insulin is a hormone that helps glucose enter the cells. People with Type 1 diabetes need to take insulin daily.

Type 2 Diabetes:

This is the more common type, making up 90% of cases. It usually occurs in adults over the age of 45. In Type 2 diabetes, the body does not use insulin properly, causing blood sugar levels to rise. This type is often related to lifestyle factors like being overweight, lack of exerercise, or poor diet.

Gestational Diabetes:

This type occurs during pregnancy and usually goes away after the baby is born. Women with gestational diabetes need to monitor their blood sugar levels carefully to protect their health and their baby’s health

Causes

Genetics:
A family history of diabetes can increase the risk, .especially for Type1 diabetes

Lifestyle factors:
Poor eating habits, lack of exercise, and obesity are leading causes of Type 2 diabetes

Autoimmune reactions:
In Type 1 diabetes, the immune system mistakenly attacks the pancreas.Pregnancy: Hormonal changes during pregnancy can cause gestational diabetes.

Age:
As people age, the risk of Type 2 diabetes increases, especially after the age of 45

Doctors use several tests to diagnose Diabetes :

Fasting blood sugar test:
This measures blood glucose levels after not eating for at least eight hours. A level of 126 mg/dL or higher suggests diabetes.

A1C test:
This test measures the average blood sugar levels over the past 2 to 3 months. An A1C of 6.5% or higher indicates diabetes.

Oral glucose tolerance test:
In this test, a person drinks a sugary solution, and blood sugar levels are measured two hours later. Levels of 200 mg/dL or higher suggest diabetes.

A fasting blood sugar of 99 mg/dL or less is considered normal.

Manging Diabetes

Diabetes is a lifelong condition, but it can be managed with proper care. Treatment depends on the type of diabetes a person has.

Type 1 Diabetes Management:

Insulin therapy: Since the body cannot produce insulin people with Type 1 diabetes need to take insulin injections or use an insulin pump. They need to monitor their blood sugar levels regularly to adjust their insulin doses.

Healthy eating: Eating a balanced diet that is low in carbohydrates and sugar helps keep blood sugar levels in check.Exercise: Regular physical activity helps the body use glucose more effectively.

Type 2 Diabetes Managemen:

Healthy eating and exercise: In many cases, Type 2 diabetes can be managed with lifestyle changes alone. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains, combined with regular exercise, helps control blood sugar levels.

Medications: If lifestyle changes aren't enough, doctors may prescribe medications like metformin to help lower blood sugar levels.Insulin: In some cases, people with Type 2 diabetes may also need insulin therapy if other treatments do not work.

Conclusion:

Diabetes is a serious and lifelong condition, but with proper management and lifestyle changes, it is possible to lead a healthy and fulfilling life. By understanding the types of diabetes, recognizing the symptoms, and following a treatment plan, individuals can prevent complications and maintain good health. Taking steps to prevent Type 2 diabetes through diet, exercise, and regular checkups is essential for reducing the global impact of this disease.
