Gestational Diabetic Mellets (GDM): Causes, Symptoms and Management

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a type of diabetes that develops during pregnancy and usually disappears after delivery.

This affects how your cells use glucose (sugar) and if it is left unabated then both mother and child can pose health risk. However, with early diagnosis and proper treatment, most women with gestational diabetes distribute healthy infants.

In this article, we provide a detailed observation of gestational diabetes causes, risk factors, symptoms, diagnosis and management to promote awareness and initial action.

  🔍 What is pregnancy diabetes

Gestational diabetes occurs when hormonal changes occur during pregnancy, making the body less responsible for insulin - a condition known as insulin resistance. This results in high blood sugar levels, especially during the second and third trimesters. Unlike type 1 or type 2 diabetes,

GDM is temporary, but it can increase the risk of development of type 2 diabetes later in life.

⚠ Symptoms of pregnancy diabetes In many cases, pregnancy diabetes does not cause noticeable symptoms. However, some women may experience: excessive thirst Frequent urination Tiredness Blurred vision Urine Because symptoms are often subtle, regular blood sugar screening is necessary between 24–28 weeks of pregnancy.

🎯 Causes pregnancy diabetes?

The exact cause is not fully understood, but it is associated with hormonal changes during pregnancy. The placenta produces hormones that help develop the child. These hormones can also prevent insulin action, which can cause insulin resistance. As pregnancy increases, insulin resistance increases. If the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin

Leading for insulin resistance. As pregnancy increases, insulin resistance increases. If the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin to remove this resistance, the blood sugar levels increase, causing pregnancy diabetes.

🧬 Risk factor for pregnancy diabetes If you are more likely to develop GDM: Before pregnancy are overweight or thick Are over 25-30 years old Type 2 is the family history of diabetes Pregnancy was pregnant in pregnancy Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is A high -risk ethnic group (eg,

is from South Asian, Middle Eastern, African, Hispanic)

🧪 diagnosis

Gestational diabetes is usually diagnosed through one of the following tests: Glucose Challenge Test (GCT): Sugar measures blood sugar after drinking solutions. Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT):

Fasting involves, then measuring blood sugar several times after consuming glucose.

🩺 Complications of pregnancy diabetes

If not managed properly, the pregnancy diabetes can give rise to serious complications, including: For child: Excessive birth weight (macrosomia) Premature birth Low blood sugar (neonatal hypoglycemia) Later the risk of development of type 2 diabetes increased in life For mother: Hypertension and pre -praympasia C-section probability increased Future Type 2 Diabetes Risk

Management of pregnancy diabetes

Proper management can greatly reduce the risk for both mother and child. Major strategies include:

1. Healthy diet Pay attention to complex carbs, lean proteins and fiber -rich vegetables. Limit sugar and sophisticated carbs. Eat small, frequent food to stabilize blood sugar.

2. Regular physical activity Medium exercise such as walking, swimming, or prenatal yoga helps improve insulin sensitivity.

Monitoring blood sugar Regular glucose tests (usually 4x per day) are required to ensure that the levels remain within a healthy range.

4. Drug or insulin If diet and exercise are not enough, insulin or oral drugs may be required.

After delivery

What happens next? In most cases, the pregnancy is solved after the birth of the diabetic baby. However: Blood sugar test should be tested for 6–12 weeks of postpartum. Women who had GDM should be examined for type 2 diabetes every 1-3 years. Lifestyle changes can reduce for a long time
